Response Format

We are in full swing with our class novel, Esperanza Rising, so I wanted to share some of the strategies we use in class when writing to the text. Your child has been taught the RACE format this year to help them self evaluate and answer the questions completely. Please ask them to explain this strategy and use it to guide their answers.

R - Restate the Question
A- Answer the Question
C- Cite Evidence from the Text
E- Explain How Your Evidence Supports Your Answer

Esperanza Rising

We have started our in depth reading of the novel Esperanza Rising! Over the next few weeks we will learn how to comprehend & discuss the novel using evidence from the text.

The learning targets for this week are:

➤ Answer comprehension questions from each chapter.
➤ Identify situations in Esperanza Rising where a character's human rights are challenged.
➤ Make inferences from the text about Esperanza, Mama, and Abuelita.
➤ Use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown or difficult words.
➤ Write to explain your thinking about the characters and how they respond to challenges.

Your child was given a copy of the novel so you should see them reading at home!

Reading Focus - Please have your child work on these skills as they are reading at home!

We use "I Can" statements in order for the kids to understand what they should be focusing on when reading. This week the following statements will guide their reading as well as our novel discussion.

  • I can quote accurately from the text when explaining what the text says and when drawing conclusions.
  • I can explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text, identifying which reasons and evidence supports which parts.
